The health of your mouth is closely tied to the overall health of your body – Musawo Julie

Dr. Julie Nalubula, also known as Musawo Julie, recently shared fascinating insights on Krakonradio about the connection between dental health and heart health. With her extensive background in both dental surgery and psychology, Dr. Nalubula emphasized that the health of our mouth is closely tied to the overall health of our body, particularly the heart.

One key factor, Dr. Nalubula explained, is the role of nitric oxide—a compound produced primarily in the oral cavity. This compound plays an essential role in breaking down food and helps regulate blood pressure by improving blood flow. However, if oral health is compromised by issues such as gum disease or dental plaque, the production of nitric oxide decreases. This deficiency can hinder the body’s natural ability to maintain heart health.

Dr. Nalubula pointed out that research shows a striking similarity between the chemicals found in dental calculus (hardened plaque) and those found in arterial plaque, which can obstruct blood flow to the heart. Poor oral health can lead to inflammation and bacterial build-up in the mouth, which may then enter the bloodstream and increase the risk of heart disease. Dr. Nalubula’s expertise sheds light on the often-overlooked importance of oral hygiene as part of a holistic approach to preventing cardiovascular issues, stressing that good oral care is fundamental for a healthy heart.
